Exercises for healthy joints

Exercise is not only important for strong bones to prevent fractures, but it also plays a crucial role in keeping your joints healthy.

Exercise plays an important part in keeping our joints healthy and reducing the risk for arthritis. 4 Healthy joints provide our bodies with the ability to move, run, jump, twist and turn. Keeping them healthy is therefore key to living an active and fulfilled life.

A balanced exercise programme combining a variety of exercises will provide the base for good joint health that will last a lifetime. This includes a combination of aerobic, muscle-strengthening and flexibility exercises.

Regular exercise is especially important if you have arthritis as it can reduce pain and keep you healthy and independent. Many people with arthritis are afraid to exercise because they believe that it’ll cause further damage to their joints, but exercise is in fact crucial for increasing strength and flexibility, reducing joint pain and helping to combat fatigue.

Exercises for healthy joints include:

  • Range-of-motion exercises – these relieve stiffness and increase your ability to move your joints through their full range of motion
  • Strengthening exercises – these exercises help you build strong muscles that support and protect joints
  • Aerobic exercise – examples of low-impact aerobic exercises that are easier on your joints include walking, bicycling, swimming or the elliptical machine
  • Other activities – yoga and tai chi can help improve balance, prevent falls and improve posture and coordination
